Ling-LingImage shot during my trip to visit The SOLD Project in Thailand. The day that I took this photo completely encapsulated everything about The SOLD Project for me. During our last day of the photo workshop with the kids, we all left as a group to walk through the nearby village, where many of the children live. This was especially powerful because the subjects in these group of photographs were their homes, their family, and their friends. Seeing the results of their photographs from that day brought me, as a foreigner, into their lives. During our walk the kids pulled us over to the side of the road and took us to a little stream of water. Immediately, Ling-Ling, one of the most energetic kids in the group, dove right in and began to swim around. This made me realize the power of The Freedom Project. What I was seeing before my eyes was a group of kids who could have been exploited and driven into a dark future that so many of their peers had been. This, in my eyes, is the Freedom Project. Ling-Ling, a kid who now has a bright future, encouraged by a loving group of SOLD staff members, supporters and their families, is enjoying his freedom and being who he wants to be.

California Sea LionsSea lions like to play their own version of "chicken" when they encounter divers underwater. This sea lion is headed straight for me as I dove at Anacapa Island, off the coast of California.

Fair OpeningThis image will always be one of my favorites because I shot it during my first tag-along assignment with Steve Malone at the Santa Barbara News-Press. I was a 16 year-old high school student and Steve and the other guys in the photo department let me join them on assignment to learn the tricks of the trade. Steve has since passed away. He was an incredible mentor for me during the seven years I worked with the paper.Within a year of shooting this photograph, I officially joined the paper's freelance team, where I worked until leaving Santa Barbara for law school.
